Luxemburg Flag History

By James Scott

Luxembourg, country in northwestern Europe. One of the world’s smallest countries, it is bordered by Belgium on the west and north, France on the south, and Germany on the northeast and east. Luxembourg has come under the control of many states and ruling houses in its long history, but it has been a separate, if not always autonomous, political unit since the 10th century.

The earliest human remains found in present-day Luxembourg date from about 5140 BCE, but little is known about the people who first populated the area. Two Belgic tribes, the Treveri, and Mediomatrici inhabited the country from about 450 BCE until the Roman conquest of 53 BCE.

The colors were branded during the Belgian Revolution in 1830, and the flag was officially designed in 1845, ten years after Luxembourg finally declared its independence from Germany. Inspired by the flag in France, the colors of the flag in Luxembourg are based on the coat of arms of its Grand Duke, Count Henry, during the 13th century. It has a red lion with white and blue stripes in the background. Such a coat of arms may be dated back to the medieval times.

The flag in Luxembourg is also known to be a bit similar to that of Netherlands’ flag. The only major difference is that its blue color is considered lighter than the flag in Netherlands. The flag in Netherlands, aside from its darker blue color, also uses a less oblong shape. The great similarity between the flags of Netherlands and Luxembourg, however, does not have any historical connection. Such similarity is known to be purely coincidental.

These colors probably came from the coat of arms of Luxembourg's counts and dukes. The blue selected was chosen to differentiate the flag from that of the Netherlands. It has been suggested to adopt the lion ensign as the national flag to make the flag more distinct from other countries.

The colors of the Luxembourg flag take their origin from the 13th-century coat of arms of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, Count Henry VI. The coat of arms featured a red lion on a field of striped white and blue lines. The coat of arms of Luxembourg dates back to medieval times. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Luxembourg Flag for the future.
